Followed him to the Post Ofice, stuck the cash in the provided envelope, dropped into the mail slot under watchful eyes, and was gone in an instant, to see two of Texas' finest, again in my rear view, each cracking a big smile.
Back in the late '80s, I was traveling east from California on I-10 (at a fair clip), when all of a sudden, I see a dust cloud in the center divide, and not much later, a red light on a DPS Mustang in my rear view...
"Wal, Mr. Shuster, it's after six in the PM, and the Justice of the Peace has gone home. It bein' Friday, and all, looks like you might hafta spend the weekend in jail! We ain't got no 'raprocity' with California, so I cain't let you just go on your way with a ticket..."
Please allow me to express my THANKS and appreciations to DPS officer Sargent Mike Urias of Van Horn Texas, who recently stopped to assist when I ran out of gas just outside of Van Horn. I told him I should have stopped at the Plateau Truck Stop! He said it happens a lot, and laughed with me about it. It’s great to meet such an outstanding dedicated public servant who is willing to go the extra 7 miles! To help! The DPS and Van Horn are very fortunate to have Sargent Urias in their community. Whew, underpants saved from a terrible fate.
Two of the sorriest-looking excuses for deputies you can imagine got out of their fast-food wrapper-filled pig-sty-on-wheels, and informed me that I was speeding (which I was). Neither could pronounce my name, so the one with the glint of rudimentary intelligence in his eyes chose an easier one, "Mr. Shuster".
Van Horn was (is?) a speed trap/fining mill. Watch your speed, and keep your cash...
"Or..., ya could post bail, $50 cash or American Express with us, at the Post Office..."
